IMG_8732 * Construction of the Gothic church began in 1248 and took, with interruptions, more than 600 years to complete - it was finally finished in 1880. The two towers are 157 meters tall, the cathedral is 144 m long and 86 m wide...

IMG_8729b * The church was built on the site of a 4th century Roman temple, a square edifice known as the 'oldest cathedral' and commissioned by Maternus, the first Christian bishop of Cologne.
CRW_8736b * On the plaza is the Roman museum.  Cologne became acknowledged as a city by the Romans in 50 CE by the name of Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium. From 260 to 271 Cologne was the capital of the Gallic Empire

IMG_1393 * the Sarcophagus of the Magi, a large gilded sarcophagus dating from the 13th century, and the largest reliquary in the Western world. It is thought to hold the remains of the Three Wise Men, whose bones and 2000 years old clothes were discovered at the opening of the shrine in 1864.
CRW_8745b * A sight I remember from my 1957 visit is this statue decorated with jewels given by the congregation of the church.

IMG_1412 * Kölsch is many only in the area of Köln and you need not order a beer... they just bring you one as it's the only beer the serve.
IMG_1408 * And like many other pubs and restruants in Germany, this one has traditional decorations.
