IMG_8732 * Construction of the Gothic church began in 1248 and took, with interruptions, more than 600 years to complete - it was finally finished in 1880. The two towers are 157 meters tall, the cathedral is 144 m long and 86 m wide...
IMG_8730 * Here's a close up view of the tips of some of the spires of the towers.
IMG_8729b * The church was built on the site of a 4th century Roman temple, a square edifice known as the 'oldest cathedral' and commissioned by Maternus, the first Christian bishop of Cologne.
CRW_8736b * On the plaza is the Roman museum. Cologne became acknowledged as a city by the Romans in 50 CE by the name of Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium. From 260 to 271 Cologne was the capital of the Gallic Empire
